As one of the world’s oldest universities, the University of Coimbra (UC) has witnessed changes in architecture for several centuries. Now through a new project facilitated by Empowered Startups, UC will collaborate on changing the future of architecture through artificial intelligence.
Entrepreneur Farid Hasnaoui has signed a research agreement with the historic Portuguese university to collectively develop his project, which aims to incorporate numerous aspects of architectural design criteria into a deep learning process, resulting in visual architectural solutions.
Collaborating with Coimbra
The announcement marks the second time in less than a month that Empowered has facilitated an R&D startup with UC via its HQA® Visa Program.
“The founders we’ve delivered to the University of Coimbra are as thrilled with the resources and support they’ve received as we are with the relationship we’ve built with this esteemed institution in a relatively short time,” revealed Chris Lennon, President of Empowered Startups. “Our partnership with the University of Coimbra is thriving as a result of our collective commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and knowledge exchange. The launch of two projects this month is just the beginning of what will be a very fruitful and productive partnership between Empowered Startups and the University of Coimbra.”
Empowering Innovation
An experienced architect who has founded and managed both engineering and architecture firms, Hasnaoui has designed and overseen projects of varying scopes. His first-hand knowledge of the time and costs associated with the design process caused him to explore the idea of improving the practice, which eventually led him to Empowered Startups HQA® Visa Program.
“My journey began with a spark of inspiration and a vision for an innovative idea. After thorough research on Empowered Startups, with a mix of excitement and determination, I decided to pursue Empowered Startups’ incubation program to bring my idea to life,” explained Hasnaoui.
“I started by diving deep into Empowered Startups’ mission and success stories. Understanding their values and the kind of startups they support gave me confidence. I meticulously prepared my business plan, ensuring it was comprehensive and compelling. I also gathered all necessary documents and crafted a pitch that highlighted the uniqueness and potential of my idea.
With an invitation letter in hand from one of the prestigious universities in Europe, I began preparing for the next big step: moving to Portugal. The onboarding process introduced me to mentors and the support team, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter. With Empowered Startups’ support, I am now ready to embark on this transformative journey and bring my vision to life in Portugal.”
Aligned with Portugal
Hasnaoui’s story resonates with many of the entrepreneurs who have discovered the formidable research facilities and opportunities Portugal has to offer through the HQA® Visa Program. By delivering foreign direct investment to universities and polytechnics throughout the country, Empowered Startups is creating opportunities for PhD and master’s students, who are more likely to remain at these institutions instead of seeking such opportunities in a larger urban centre or another country.
The Canadian multinational has pledged to bring more than 50 million Euros of foreign direct investment to Portugal over the next three years via the HQA® Visa Program. Its goals align with the country’s stated mission to improve territorial cohesion and improve talent retention.
