National Day For Truth and Reconciliation

National Day For Truth and Reconciliation

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Empowered Startups’ offices will be closed that day as we pause, reflect, and learn about the devastating impact of the Indian Residential School System, and the harm it has perpetuated for Indigenous peoples. We encourage each of you, in your own way, to participate in the reconciliation process with open minds and hearts. This work is important and must be done for us to move forward together.

We encourage you to participate in educational and commemorative activities in your community, to listen to the stories of survivors, and to reflect in the manner that best suits you.

Whether it’s through quiet reflection, participating in events, watching a film, reading a book, or sharing conversation about reconciliationwe encourage you to recognize the traumatic legacy of residential schools and learn more.

Fitness Box takes a Gold Medal in the Canadian International Invention Innovation Competition

Fitness Box, a venture in incubation at Empowered Startups, was awarded a gold medal at the seventh annual International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN), receiving recognition for “outstanding creativity and excellence in innovation” for the business concept.

iCAN is an international innovation competition that aims to unite global creative and innovative initiatives with Canadian inventors and provide participants with the opportunity to expand their international network and promote their inventions, new products, and research projects through a weekend of competition, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. The competition was organized by the Toronto International Society of Innovation and Advanced Skills, with participants from over 86 different countries.

Fitness Box’s mission is to make a healthy lifestyle easily accessible to all by creating mobile fitness facilities equipped with high quality fitness equipment, personal trainers, and fitness classes. Founder Mehdi Givechi created Fitness Box after seeing a gap in the market for Muslim women and busy urban dwellers who require private facilities due to culture and religion or cannot find the time to exercise at a conventional gym.

Mehdi’s main goals for participating in iCAN 2022 were to showcase his venture to Canadian investors and connect with the international entrepreneurship community in Toronto. Fitness Box and its mobile booking app will be available for customers to use in downtown Toronto in Q4, 2022.

Mehdi Givechi founded Fitness Box during the pandemic to broaden access to gyms and fitness facilities by creating mobile pop-up gyms equipped with high quality fitness equipment, personal trainers, and enhanced safety measures such as thermal scanners, air purifiers, and anti-microbial coated equipment.

ShipSafe® Maritime Technologies Inc. joins forces with DANAOS Management Consultants S.A. to build the next generation maritime software solutions using AR and AI.

Vancouver, B.C, August 18th,  2022ShipSafe Maritime Technologies Inc. a startup in incubation at Empowered Startups, signed an agreement with DANAOS, a pioneer in ship management systems with over 28 years of experience and 9,000 vessels. The partnership will focus on developing the next-generation AI/AR-based remote inspection platform for the shipping industry. ShipSafe with its niche expertise in remote inspections, has successfully served numerous ocean-bound fleets. Both companies believe that their mutual synergy and combined resources will fast-track development and further enhance the current user experience.

We saw ShipSafe as a natural technology partner to build next-generation remote inspections platform to better serve the shipping industry and drive much needed digital transformation in the vertical” – Mr. Dimitris Theodossiou – Owner, Danaos Management Consultants S.A.

The Bandwidth Barrier

ShipSafe Maritime Technologies believes that software designed for full connectivity using fibre optic bandwidth delivery is bound to fail when installed on ships. This is one of the greatest barriers to managing complex IT solutions onboard ships, and is often quoted as a reason to not increase investment in technologies onboard ships.

CEO and Founder of Vancouver-based ShipSafe Suite, Sahil Andrews Chand, recognized this problem and has developed a suite of Network Operations Center (NOC) tools specifically designed to consider bandwidth limitations. Providing IT Automation for servers and shipboard networks, the software allows for monitoring and control of the onboard IT infrastructure while automating time-consuming tasks. With new requirements outlined in the IMO’s 2021 Cyber Risk Management Code, compliance and future proofing become an issue.  ShipSafe IT Suite aids with that compliance while reducing costs anywhere from 40-60%.

Sahil believes that the collaboration with DANAOS will allow ShipSafe to quickly scale its solution and make it accessible to DANAOS’ nine thousand-plus fleet. This will ensure that the remote inspection platform is built with real-time access and understanding of user needs and that the deployment of the software is seamless.
