Pause, Reflect and Learn – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Pause, Reflect and Learn – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This Thursday, September 30, 2021, is the first federally recognized National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Empowered Startups’ offices will be closed that day as we pause, reflect, and learn about the devastating impact of the Indian Residential School System, and the harm it has perpetuated for Indigenous peoples. We encourage each of you, in your own way, to participate in the reconciliation process with open minds and hearts. This work is important and must be done for us to move forward together.

We encourage you to participate in educational and commemorative activities in your community, to listen to the stories of survivors, and to reflect in the manner that best suits you.

At Empowered Startups we are extremely fortunate to be working alongside Tanina Williams, the Indigenous knowledge keeper for our Empowered Nations program.

Tanina has shared a few ways that you can participate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

  • Join in a local event on Truth and Reconciliation –  An example of a great option is the  Squamish Lil’wat Cultural CentreOn Thursday, survivors from residential schools will speak. The Warrior song will be sung. Stories will be told.
  • Learn more about the journey toward reconciliation by listening to this CBC Radio feature from former Senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Murray Sinclair.

Whether it’s through quiet reflection, participating in events, watching a film, reading a book, or sharing conversation about reconciliationwe encourage you to recognize the traumatic legacy of residential schools and learn more.

Globe & Mail Feature: Empowered Startups program helps high schoolers think like entrepreneurs

Empowered Startups is pleased to be featured in the Globe & Mail!

Empowered Startups Ltd. wants more students to consider starting their own business, so the Vancouver-based global incubator created Young Empowered Startuppers (YES) — a program that teaches high schoolers entrepreneurship.

The program, launched in 2019 and currently taught in seven school districts across Alberta and B.C., takes students through a cutting-edge curriculum that covers various aspects of being an entrepreneur: from outlining a problem to finding a solution and taking an idea to market.

It’s a “plug and play” program that can be done virtually, in a classroom or via a hybrid model. The coursework includes assignments, collaboration and assessment tools delivered in a fun and engaging style that students can easily follow.
