International Women’s Day 2023

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th. This day is dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. The day also serves as a call to action for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

One area where women have been traditionally underrepresented is in the technology sector. However, there has been a significant shift in recent years, with more and more women entering the tech industry and making their mark as entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders.

Women founders are crucial in the tech industry because they bring unique perspectives, experiences, and skills to the table. Women founders are often focused on solving real-world problems that impact women and other marginalized communities. By bringing more women into the tech industry, we can create more inclusive and diverse products and services that better serve everyone.

The tech industry has a long way to go when it comes to gender equality, but progress is being made. Many initiatives and organizations are working to promote women’s participation in technology, such as Girls Who Code, Women Who Tech, and the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology.

Women founders in the tech industry have also been making significant strides in recent years. According to a report by PitchBook, the number of startups founded solely by women has increased by 58% since 2009.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s important to remember that gender equality is not just a women’s issue, it’s a human issue. We all have a role to play in creating a more equitable and just world for everyone. By supporting women founders in the tech industry and promoting gender diversity in all sectors, we can help build a better future for all of us.

Portugal Has Been Named the World’s Fourth Best Country For ExPats…And We Aren’t Surprised.

Expat Insider 2022 just ranked Portugal 4th out of 52 destinations overall for Expats. Honestly, we aren’t surprised. Between the climate, tax advantages, general quality of life, opportunities, education system, and expedient immigration programs for executives like the HQA Visa Program – Expats have several reasons to be happy.

According to the report:

93% of expats find it easy and safe to get around on foot and/or by bicycle (vs. 77% globally), and 82% feel that they can openly express themselves and their opinions (vs. 64% globally). For the latter factor, Portugal actually ranks first worldwide. When asked what they like most about life in Portugal, an expat from India mentions “the good environment and peaceful life.”

Portugal lands in another top 10 spot in the Ease of Settling In Index (7th). “I enjoy the beauty of the country and the relaxed way of life of the Portuguese people and their kindness,” shares an expat from the Netherlands, and a respondent from Germany points out that “people are friendly and open”. In fact, 82% of expats describe the Portuguese as generally friendly (vs. 66% globally), and 80% consider them friendly towards foreign residents in particular (vs. 65% globally). They also find it easy to make local friends (51% vs. 42% globally) and are happy with their social life (67% vs. 56% globally).

The low cost of living (8th) is another highlight of expat life in Portugal. More than seven in ten (71%) rate the general cost of living positively (vs. 45% globally).

Business Incubation in Action – Scintillant Ventures

How Empowered Startups helped Scintillant Ventures grow into a cutting-edge Startup in the Canadian EdTech industry.

Scintillant Ventures is a Vancouver-based startup designing and building automated teacher workflows and simplifying educational content creation. Ron Ejercito, founder of Scintillant Ventures, explored this business opportunity while learning how to formulate and test business model assumptions in the Empowered Startups’ Global Startup Accelerator (GSA). Throughout the GSA, Ron learned how to use essential tools to track and measure success, including the lean canvas, traction modelling, and conducting customer interviews.

In February 2021, Ron entered the Empowered Startups incubator to validate his business model in Canada. Empowered Startups connected Ron to several key partners, such as Mitacs, Riipen, and academic research labs. This enabled him to conduct R&D, build a digital presence, and develop a prototype educational content authoring platform and student planner. He also works closely with several interns he met through Empowered’s network at Simon Fraser University and University Canada West.

As Scintillant Ventures advances its technology into a viable product, Empowered Startups is working closely with Ron to help him validate his prototypes through another round of market research and determine the best customer segments to expand his business.
