A project intent on improving self-custody in cryptocurrency will be researched and developed at the University of Algarve (UAlg) thanks to Empowered Startups’ HQA® Visa Program. The innovative fintech endeavour is a collaboration between Indonesian investor and entrepreneur, Hendra Tjahayadi, and the bustling post-secondary institution in southern Portugal.

Experience and Expertise

A graduate of Stanford University, Tjahayadi brings a wealth of experience in technology to the project. He began his career as a software engineer at Google before accepting senior engineering positions at multiple successful companies, including Lyft and DoorDash. In recent years, Tjahayadi has applied his expertise to fintech startups while transitioning into advisory and investors roles with several businesses.

Having worked for multi-national companies across various jurisdictions, Tjahayadi is extremely impressed with Empowered Startups’ effectiveness in operating its HQA® Visa Program.

“Empowered Startups’ team is working together very efficiently and gets results very quickly,” stated a pleased Tjahayadi. “From the beginning to finishing the biometrics appointment took about four months. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them.”

Problem Solver

As cryptocurrency evolves, users are in need of solutions with respect to accessing assets in more complex scenarios. While the original premise of cryptocurrency security was based on using a single key to access one’s assets, the field has evolved to include multi-signature access. For example, in the case of a married couple utilizing their account for daily use, current technology has adapted to allow the unique signature of either user to access funds.

However, there is not currently a multi-signature solution for more complex situations such as parents creating an inheritance account for their children. Tjahayadi’s collaborative project with researchers at UAlg aims to create a solution for this scenario along with other complex situations not currently accounted for.

Investment and Opportunity

The launch of Tjahayadi’s project is the latest example of the long and productive relationship between Empowered Startups and UAlg through the HQA® Visa Program. The Canadian multi-national has delivered more than 1 million euros of foreign direct investment to the Portuguese institution by facilitating more than 30 partnerships with transnational investors. Not only have these projects brought significant funding to UAlg, but they have created at least 80 research opportunities for Portuguese researchers and students, facilitating knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and industry connections that enhance career prospects.
