As the need to better utilize our food supply grows, AVID Distribution Connection Ltd (AVIDCXN) is growing with it.  AVIDCXN is a startup in incubation at Empowered Startups that aims to tackle the grave issue of food wastage in Canada, which experiences an annual loss of approximately $31 billion worth of food. Given the magnitude of the industry and the problem it faces, AVIDCXN is expanding its team with the addition of Maria Alejandra Jimenez Ospina as a Marketing and Sales Intern.

Founded in 2022, AVIDCXN operates as an online platform that connects Canadian food manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers with retailers to give new life to soon-to-expire items and prevent them from going to waste through heavily discounted prices. Maria Alejandra will support AVIDCXN by creating their marketing strategy and developing partnerships with food manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers to list their soon-to-expire products on AVIDCXN’s platform.

“We are excited to have Maria Alejandra as part of our team,” stated Le Quang Vu , Co-Founder and CEO of AVID Connection. “AVIDCXN serves as a facilitator in the food supply chain, and the faster we can move soon-to-expire products from manufacturers and wholesalers to retailers, the more value we can create for end consumers and the planet. Maria Alejandra’s work will result in the foundation of partnerships, users, and engagement that enables AVIDCXN to act on its mission.”

Food that has been landfilled is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. AVIDCXN is on a mission to prevent this from occurring by acting as a unique auction platform for trading soon-to-expire products from farms, manufacturers, and distributors to convenience stores, supermarkets, retailers, and restaurants.

When dealing with soon-to-expire foods, speed is critical. This requires AVIDCXN to continuously enlist new buyers and sellers so that food can quickly change hands and still provide value to the end consumer. Maria Alejandra will be tasked with designing and implementing a comprehensive marketing strategy for suppliers and buyers that will enable AVIDCXN to scale in a way that not only improves food accessibility but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

“There are short feedback loops in measuring user acquisition and engagement in the technology industry, so this role is a great opportunity to take everything that I learned in my marketing program and continue to build on it,” commented Maria Alejandra Jimenez Ospina.

Facilitated by Empowered Startups, AVIDCXN went through a rigorous review process to partially fund the new position through the Mitacs Business Strategy Internship program. This addition not only provides value to AVIDCXN, but also offers invaluable benefits to Maria Alejandra’s future career as she will refine critical business skills such as problem-solving, communication, and project management, all set within the practical context of a technology startup. Moreover, interactions with various stakeholders will broaden their professional network, offering a chance for mentorship and potential future opportunities.
