When word spread that Montreal’s McGill University launched more startups than any university in North America last year, there was a sense of pride felt on the west coast of Canada. Despite being nowhere near McGill geographically, Vancouver-based Empowered Startups certainly played a role in the remarkable accomplishment.
Historic Achievement
In 2023, McGill launched 28 research-based startup companies, more than any university in North America based on results from AUTM, an international non-profit based in the US that supports academic research and its ensuing transfer to commercial partners. According the AUTM, it is the most startups ever launched by a Canadian university in a single year, an excellent reflection of the quality of McGill’s research community and the resources dedicated to innovation by the globally recognized university.
Empowering Innovation
A pertinent example is McGill licensing both Empowered Startups’ online platform and methodology for its Engine Centre, which supports technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship across McGill and helps accelerate the commercialization of McGill inventions and software. The university uses Empowered’s proprietary platform, ESPlatform, to train their aspiring business leaders on how to launch ventures with the lowest risk and fewest available resources.
“This is exactly what we built this platform to facilitate – commercialization of innovations and discoveries made at Research Universities,” stated Chris Lennon, President of Empowered Startups. “We have a long and proud history of being an important cog in the wheel of getting research discoveries out of the lab and to market. We’re committed to supporting innovation that advances the state of the art in some meaningful way; and the overwhelming majority of those advances are connected to inventions and discoveries at Research Universities.”
Internationally Recognized
In addition to being a platform developed in Canada and employed by top-tier Canadian research universities like McGill, ESPlatform has been adopted by companies and institutions around the world. Over 750 startups in 12 different countries have utilized ESPlatform to enhance the development of their respective ventures, and it has received various awards for its effectiveness and intuitive delivery.
As an incubator that facilitates R&D backed programs in Canada, the USA, and Portugal, Empowered Startups provides all its entrepreneurs with ESPlatform as an essential tool in creating and growing their startups.
