In December 2025, the Government of Canada closed the Start-Up Visa (SUV) program to new applicants. Those who entered before the deadline could be stuck in large processing backlogs. For applicants who were expecting the SUV path to be available, and for those who are stuck in limbo and already in Canada, the question has become: What now?

Where Did the SUV Program Go?

Canada’s SUV program is currently paused while it’s being restructured. The pause aligns with the 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan, and a new entrepreneurial pilot is expected to replace the traditional SUV program eventually. Many incubators that offered pathways to the SUV have closed their programs, leaving entrepreneurs stuck in the process, unsure of what’s next.

Founders and entrepreneurs who are already in Canada are now rushing to apply for permanent residence or discovering that their work permits are suspended or require extensions. Many entrepreneurs are now searching for alternative routes to stay, build, and grow their ventures in Canada.

The Alberta Advantage

While the SUV program isn’t a viable option anymore, entrepreneurs seeking Canadian permanent residence still have alternative pathways, such as the Alberta Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream (FGES), for those who qualify.

The Alberta FGES offers a unique opportunity for talented foreign graduates with entrepreneurial ambitions to establish and operate a business in one of Canada’s most dynamic provinces, Alberta. Designed for individuals who hold a post-secondary degree from outside Canada and possess a strong business plan, this program provides a clear pathway to permanent residency through entrepreneurship.

This unique pathway turns education, skills, and ideas into thriving ventures while providing a route to Canadian permanent residency. It’s the ideal pivot for credible entrepreneurs under the SUV program mandate, and a way to redirect your path to PR through Alberta.
