Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Empowered Startups’ offices will be closed that day as we pause, reflect, and learn about the devastating impact of the Indian Residential School System, and the harm it has perpetuated for Indigenous peoples. We encourage each of you, in your own way, to participate in the reconciliation process with open minds and hearts. This work is important and must be done for us to move forward together.

We encourage you to participate in educational and commemorative activities in your community, to listen to the stories of survivors, and to reflect in the manner that best suits you.

Whether it’s through quiet reflection, participating in events, watching a film, reading a book, or sharing conversation about reconciliationwe encourage you to recognize the traumatic legacy of residential schools and learn more.
