An innovative new project with the potential to significantly enhance sustainability is coming to the University of Nevada, Reno thanks to Empowered Startups’ EB-2 NIW Startup R&D Program.
Spearheaded by an experienced South African entrepreneur, this novel project aims to research and develop more sustainable solutions for the extraction of metals through Biohydrometallurgy, which involves using microorganisms to unearth these valuable resources. An official agreement between the two parties has been signed, and it is expected that the project will formally launch in the very near future.

The state’s flagship public university, the University of Nevada, Reno recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is rated among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
Solidarity in Support
Backed by the US Department of Commerce, the EB-2 NIW Startup R&D Program pairs transnational entrepreneurs with top-tier research institutions in the USA for the purpose of catalyzing innovation in US universities. The program has been as well received by US Government officials as it has by accomplished international businesspeople, which is why Empowered Startups was invited by the US Ambassador to Canada, David L Cohen, to be a part of Canada’s Trade Delegation at this year’s SelectUSA Investment Summit.
“The support we’ve received at the federal and state levels has been formidable and serves to further validate the strength of our EB-2 NIW Startup R&D Program,”
Shawn Olson, Vice President of Business Development at Empowered Startups.
“These American officials see what we see: that the EB-2 NIW Startup R&D Program is delivering direct investment to universities, stimulating innovation, and providing critical research opportunities for PhD and master’s students. The US has been the world’s leader in attracting foreign investment for the past 12 years, so its endorsement of EB-2 NIW Startup R&D Program speaks volumes.”
